332 Tonne Multi-Slab Hangar Doors for 90m LTM Maintenance Hangars, Malta

LTM Hangar Doors

To further expand and develop their company, LTM have chosen REIDsteel to design and manufacture a new maintenance complex in Malta, with two bays in addition to current services. There are 3 hangars, in total: 2 wide body hangars 90m x 90m x 26, and 1 narrow body hangar 90m x 66m x 15m.

The hangars are REIDsteel patent Archspan frames, with REIDsteel partitioning, cladding, wall vents, insulation and gutters. We also designed and manufactured the 332 tonne hangar doors.

The narrow body hangar has a door with 6 slabs on 3 tracks, giving clear entrance of 60m wide, left, right or centre, by 15m clear height. The two higher hangars have 12 doors slabs on 3 tracks, giving an entrance up to 120m wide open left, right or centre, with 26m height overlapping on each hangar.

Helicopter Hangar Doors with Outriggers, Mauritania

Helicopter Hangar and doors

This helicopter hangar was constructed for Woodside Mauritania. It is a multi-span, propped portal building with REIDsteel Archspan frames. The hangar measures 25m x 25m, and is 5m high, with two lean-tos on either side.

There are 5.5m outriggers on each side of the doorway, meaning doors can be rolled back to give maximum clear entry of 25m. Both the hangar doors and personnel doors were manufactured by REIDsteel.

REIDsteel also supplied a 2 tonne EOT crane for the hangar, as well as incorporating crane beams and rails into the steelwork.

Hangar Door with Outrigger on one side, Bristol Flying Club

Outrigger Hangar Door

As one of the fastest growing regional airports, Bristol International Airport needed to expand and create more apron space. For this expansion to take place, it was necessary to relocate Bristol Flying Club from the north side of the airport to the south side, and provide additional light aircraft parking. Civil engineers BAM Nuttall chose REIDsteel to construct the new steel buildings, including doors.

Construction of the 30m by 60m steel portal frame maintenance hangar was undertaken on a design and build basis, whilst the new 2-storey steel framed office building was designed by the client’s own team. Maximum clear entry was required for the hangar, but as the office building was built just a few metres to the right of the hangar, there was only room for an outrigger to the left of the doors. REIDsteel were able to overcome building space limitations, and design a practical and economical hangar which met all of the specifications.

Maintenance Hangars (including doors) for Chilean Air Force

Hangar and hangar doors for Chilean Air Force

REIDsteel constructed these two aircraft maintenance hangars in Iquique, Chile, for use by the Chilean Air Force. The first hangars spans 42m x 37m, and has a clear height of 9m, whilst the other hangar is slightly smaller, measuring 26m x 34m x 8.5m. The hangars have curved roofs, with offices on one side, and a raised floor on the other. They are designed to withstand wind speeds up to 150km/hr.

The hangar doors were manufactured by REIDsteel, and have 0.3m outriggers on either side to allow maximum clear entry. The doors are manually operated, which is an advantage in remote regions where the electricity supply is not reliable, and the doors are not too wide.
